There’s not 1 but 2 tabletop gaming events this weekend.

Hobby-X 2017

This weekend marks the 20th anniversary of Hobby-X, South Africa’s premier hobby expo. There’s going to be lots to see, even talks on how to turn a profit from your hobby but what I want to see is the Solarpop exhibit. Solarpop is a company formed by the merger of the 3 largest table top game distributors in SA.

Solarpop has actually been around for a while now but this weekend is their official launch! Here is the press release.

“In June 2016 three of South Africa’s top specialty toy and game distributors (Skycastle Games & Toys, Boardgames South Africa and Blowfish Entertainment) merged into a brand new company named Solarpop Distribution. Now, 8 months later, we are excited to announce our official launch event at Hobby-X 2017, from 2 – 5 March 2017!

At Hobby-X Solarpop will officially present itself to consumers and retailers with a large exhibition area displaying all the top ranges and new categories we are importing, distributing, and promoting in South Africa for 2017 & beyond.

The exhibition area will also include an impressive multimedia demonstration and play area, which will showcase our top-selling and new games, as well as provide a hands-on experience of our new toy and S.T.E.M./educational ranges.

Games, games and more games.

“We aim to help make Hobby-X an even more fun and entertaining experience for the whole family”, says Eugene Vermeulen, one of the company’s executive directors. “Solarpop is a firm believer in building stronger families, friendships and communities through shared play experiences, and we’ve seen South Africans embrace this new form of entertainment in a big way. Board gaming is one of the fastest growing popular forms of entertainment and is making a big comeback internationally with gaming styles and genres for all interests.”

“On top of that we’re seeing a new global trend in S.T.E.M. products (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Maths) that is presenting educational product in a fresh and extremely fun way. We will be launching many exciting titles in this category at Hobby-X and invite kids, parents and educators to come have a look and experience what is available out there.”

Solarpop will be partnering with two of our valued retailers, Nexus and Games 4 Brains to present one of the largest retail experiences at the show.

Some of Solarpop’s exciting products on show and for sale will include The Pokémon Trading Card Game, Star Wars X-Wing, Bananagrams, Perplexus, Spot It, Dr Eureka, Catan, Ticket To Ride, Dixit, Zomlings, Magic: The Gathering, Star Wars Destiny, Funko, and a comprehensive set of S.T.E.M. titles.

There orange and black blur on the 2nd last shelf can only be Attack on Titan. I love the Anime and I can’t wait to get my hands on the game.

We invite retailers to come meet with Solarpop at Hobby X to engage in business discussions with the team.”

So while they will be having a larger presence that normal, they will have extra demos available. Usually they have a decent amount of games but this year promises to be a bit more special. In addition to that they usually have discounts during the expo. I also know that they will have new stock, previously unreleased in SA, available to purchase. It’s a pity that I might not be able to make it, but I’m going to try!

Hobby-X 2017
Loads of demo space to play but I expect it to fill up quickly.

Additionally this weekend is the first weekend of the month. That means Timeless board games day. So if you can’t make it to JHB north, then you can still head off to JHB East for a day of fun and games, literally.
