The new year has begun and already it feels like the holidays have not really happened i.e. I need another one. While it was short I did have plenty of time to reflect on the year and see if I wanted to do anything differently this year. There are a few things that I’m going to change.
Playing games because I like playing games
First, I’m not going to go out of my way to get and play games just to have something to review. I’m not going to log my plays nor will I be doing a 10 x 10 this year. I’m just going to have fun and enjoy games, or at least I’m going to try to. Ronin and I have been playing a lot of Star Wars Destiny and it was a blast so I’ve decided to get more family oriented games.
I’ve cancelled my Gloomhaven pre-order (GASP! SHOCK! HORROR!) and used the money to get Cavern Tavern, Champions of Midgard and Camel UP and a few Destiny booster packs. Interestingly enough, the game my wife most wanted to play, Camel Up, was not in the box when the store first shipped it. Then I was off sick when it was shipped and when I finally got to open it the cards were not in the box! They don’t call me Lucky Luke for nothing 😛
This won’t mean that I’ll be playing fewer games just that I’m taking pressure off myself to play games. I realised that I’ll be having people over to play games Monday, Tuesday & Thursdays, Friday is Family Game night and I’ve got a standing invite for Saturday games with a friend. I also play the odd Wednesday at a local store and at semi-regular events during the month. That’s a lot of games.
I had a sick day on Monday and used the time to make a paint rack with the box that my games were shipped in an some toilet rolls.
Now that my desk is tidy I’m going to try to paint more often. I know I still need to finish DOOM, I’m just not in the mood right now. I received the first wave of Mythic Battles Pantheon this week and it’s a heck of a lot of plastic, gorgeous plastic.
I’ll get to finishing DOOM, I just want to paint something from a non sci-fi setting first. My holiday project was Fallout the board game from Fantasy Flight. I’m really chuffed with the results. So much so that I’ve used the pic as the header for this post. My first project for the year and my first post for the year.
About a year ago I purchased 5 sheets of foamcore… I need to start using them. Ronin has made a single piece of terrain for Warhammer 40K but I have done nothing with it I need to make a few inserts so I can discard some expansion boxes and free up precious shelf space.
On top of that I want to make more terrain, both for 40K and Mythic Battles and I want to make some card and counter trays. I’ve also taken a liking to using upgraded game components in my games, it just feels better so I’m going to have to try to figure out how to make some of my own. No more cubes for me!
So, that’s the changes I want to implement for myself for this year. Not really trying anything new but rather taking a step back and re-focusing.
*fingers crossed! 2018, here I come!
