So this week marks a year since I started this blog. Damn time flies. I have to say that it was more work that I initially thought it would be. I had initially planned to post every other week but on average I post once a week and more often than not twice! However there were a lot of fun and games 😉
One of my reasons for starting this blog was to get myself to play more board games. In that sense it’s been a HUGE success. I actually started logging my games so I could see how it’s going. So looking at the stats on the BGG app:
That’s a lot of games. I was even more impressed when I realised that I started logging the games after the blog was up so it’s not even been a year! That is actually scary; it’s a lot of time spent playing games. I had to stop and ask myself how? I broke it down to attending, on average, 3 games sessions a week + a few weekend sessions every month. On top of that I play solo games while the kids are doing homework, or games on my tablet, with no sound, so as not to disturb them.
Still that’s a lot of games and at times it does kind of feel like work. BGSA have been kind enough to loan me games to review. So I think it’s only fair if I play at each game at least 3 times before typing up a review. I try for 6 but that’s not always possible. Games are meant to be fun and I don’t want to force games on people so if someone requests a particular game that I have, I’d rather play that because they would enjoy it more.
The flip side to that is that I’ve had to teach a lot of games to a lot of people so I’m getting better at that 😉 Also I’m getting a lot of exposure to the gaming community in South Africa. From meeting the people behind BGSA and Skycastle to store owners. I also spend a fair amount of time talking with the guys from Battle Wizards and Timeless. I love meeting people and games are a great way to do that.
I think my writing is improving, 0.001% is still an improvement 🙂 and I know my photography is in need of a lot of work. I have learnt a lot though, about wordpress, games and taking photos. All in all it has been a really good year, gaming wise.
I’m going to have to keep my fingers crossed that I can keep things going. I’ve had so many ideas to make changes to the blog but time, and life have been conspiring against me, for now, keeping momentum would probably be first prize.
However I’m going to try to cut down on the games a bit. The #stuffOnMyDesk posts will be on the increase as I’m going to try to paint more of my models. It was part of the hobby that I really enjoyed. I hate cleaning the models but the painting was great. Even though I was not that good at it, it helped me to relax. so more painting, less gaming. Hopefully it will be more gaming with painted models. Games these days have fantastic models and it seems like a shame to leave them looking naked.
Here’s to another good year.
